SWMPSite Waste Management Plans.

A Site Waste Management Plan that forecasts waste, sets reduction and reuse targets, and records what actually left site, linked to audit data and live tracking so the diversion figures are real.

What is a SWMP?

Book an audit

A Site Waste Management Plan (SWMP) forecasts the waste a construction or demolition project will produce, sets targets for reducing, reusing and recycling it, and records what actually happened. It turns the waste hierarchy from a principle into a plan with named owners and real figures.

  • Forecast waste by type and quantity before work starts
  • Targets for reduction, reuse, recycling and diversion from landfill
  • A record of actual movements: carrier, destination, European Waste Code and quantity
  • Responsibility assigned, so the plan is owned, not filed

Why you need one.

The Site Waste Management Plans Regulations 2008 were repealed in England in 2013, so a SWMP is no longer a legal requirement in its own right. It is still asked for in several places, and it is still the best way to control waste cost and carbon.

  • Written into many planning conditions and main-contractor policies
  • Supports BREEAM waste credits and ISO 14001 environmental management systems
  • Often required by public-sector and corporate clients through contract
  • The forecast-versus-actual discipline is what keeps waste down and diversion honest

How we do it.

We build the SWMP on the same platform and audit data as the rest of the work, so the forecast is grounded in an actual survey and the actuals are tracked as materials leave site.

  • Forecast drawn from the pre-demolition or pre-refurbishment audit, not a generic benchmark
  • Reuse-led targets, with reusable items brokered to 300+ Trade Partners before anything is binned
  • Every movement logged against its pathway, with a Goods Transfer Note
  • A closing report comparing forecast to actual: reuse rate, recycling rate, diversion from landfill, embodied carbon avoided

Audit Enquiry.

Tell us about your project and we will come back with a scope and a fee proposal.

It helps to include:

  • The site address and approximate floor area (GIA)
  • The audit you need, or the planning, BREEAM or GLA requirement it is for
  • Your programme: when you need the report, and when strip-out or demolition starts
  • Any drawings, asbestos surveys or previous audits of the building

We have completed over 250 audits across the UK, to BREEAM, GLA and LEED requirements. We aim to respond the same day, or within 24 hours, and can be on site within 5 days.

Areas Material Index covers.

We cover the whole of the UK. Read how we meet compliance in specific regions, or get in touch to start your project.

Audit to Action.

Every audit is a live inventory. Use it to catalogue, manage exchange and track your materials. Material Index offers follow-on services to broker your materials to registered Trade Partners before strip-out or deconstruction begins.

FAQ.

Is a SWMP a legal requirement?

In England the SWMP Regulations 2008 were repealed in 2013, so not in its own right. It is still required by many planning conditions, BREEAM credits and client contracts, and remains best practice for controlling waste.

How is it different from a pre-demolition audit?

The audit catalogues what is in the building. The SWMP plans and records how the resulting waste is managed, with targets and actuals. The audit feeds the SWMP.

Do you track actual waste, or just write the plan?

Both. Every movement is logged on the platform with a Goods Transfer Note, and we report forecast against actual at closeout.
