What is a material passport?
A material passport is a digital record of the materials and components installed in a building: what they are, where they are, their condition, and their environmental and technical data. Material Index passports live on our platform rather than in a static PDF, so the information stays useful through operation, refurbishment and the next reuse of each material.
What is a building asset register?
A record of every asset in a building: what it is, where it is, its condition and what it is worth. On Material Index the register stays live, so it can be used through operation and refurbishment and when deciding what to reuse or sell.
Can we run our own audits on the platform?
Yes. Contractors, consultants and designers license the platform to run their own material surveys, audits and circular economy services, with our team setting up your users and supporting your first projects. Every project team we audit for also gets access to review the materials we catalogue.
Can the platform be customised to our organisation?
Yes. We configure the platform's workflows, reporting and branding to your organisation. Bespoke licences can add custom API integrations, so the data moves between Material Index and your other systems.
Is the platform used outside the UK?
Yes. Organisations in the US, Australia and Spain use Material Index alongside our UK partners.
Does the platform work on site?
Yes. It runs on phones and tablets as well as desktop. Auditors photograph materials on site, and AI-assisted capture turns batches of images into structured records with descriptions and classifications, which your team reviews before they are saved.
How much does a platform licence cost?
It depends on how many users and projects you have. We offer project, portfolio and partner licences, and bespoke licences can include custom API integrations. Book a demo and we will set it up around a real project and quote for your team.
Can we move materials between our own projects?
Yes. Internal exchange lets you push audited materials to your other projects or to storage before they go to market, so materials from one site can be reused on another. You keep visibility of what is stored, where it is and what it is worth.
Does it support BREEAM and GLA Circular Economy Statement reporting?
Yes. Reports cover weights, embodied carbon, reuse rates and diversion from landfill for every project, in the form needed for BREEAM Wst 01 credits and GLA Circular Economy Statements (opens in new tab). Each figure can be broken down to the individual component on the platform.
Can we sell materials through the platform?
Yes. Listings go to the Material Index marketplace in one click, where we broker them to over 300 registered Trade Partners, from manufacturers to reclamation specialists. We coordinate collection with your programme and track every item with a Goods Transfer Note.
