Why structure is the biggest carbon saving available
Structural material carries more embodied carbon than almost anything else on a project. Reusing a steel section avoids the emissions of making a new one, and unlike recycling, reuse keeps the original processing intact rather than melting it down and starting again. That makes structure the single highest-value reuse decision on most schemes.
Engage early, or it won't happen
Structural reuse depends on timing more than any other category. Reclaimed sections come in the sizes and lengths that were recovered, not the sizes you would specify from new, so the design needs enough flexibility to work with what is available. Brought in at feasibility or early design stage this is usually straightforward; raised after the frame is fully detailed, it rarely survives.
Testing and traceability
Your structural engineer will want confidence in the material's properties before it goes back into a frame. Depending on the application and what is known about the source, that can mean reviewing original documentation where it exists, or physical testing to establish strength and weldability. Agree with your engineer at the outset what evidence they will accept, since this determines what is worth sourcing.
Section sizes, lengths and quantities
Sections are recorded at audit with their size designation, length and quantity. Check the available lengths against your setting-out early: a section that is the right size but too short for the span cannot be made longer, and cutting down a longer section is far easier than the reverse. Order some contingency where you can, as matching an identical section later from a different source is not always possible.
